WBCS New Exam Pattern



The West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) conducts the WBCS examination to select candidates for various posts in the West Bengal Civil Service. The exam consists of two parts: a written test and an interview.

The written test comprises eight papers, and the syllabus for each paper varies depending on the post applied for. The eight papers are:

Paper I - Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali (compulsory for all candidates)

Paper II - English (compulsory for all candidates)

Paper III - General Studies-I (History, Geography, and Indian Polity)

Paper IV - General Studies-II (Science and Technology, Environment, and Current Affairs)

Paper V - The Indian Constitution and Indian Economy (with emphasis on planning in India)

Paper VI - Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning

Paper VII - Optional Subject (Paper-I)

Paper VIII - Optional Subject (Paper-II) 


The optional subjects include Anthropology, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology, among others.

Preliminary Exam

The West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) Preliminary Exam is the first stage of the WBCS exam. It is a screening test that is conducted to shortlist candidates for the next stage of the selection process, which is the WBCS Main Exam.

The WBCS Preliminary Exam consists of only one paper, which is objective in nature and has multiple-choice questions. The paper is divided into two parts: Part-I and Part-II. Part-I consists of questions on General Studies, while Part-II consists of questions on Arithmetic and Reasoning.

The General Studies section covers a wide range of topics, including Indian History, Geography, Economy, Polity, Environment, Science and Technology, Current Affairs, and Culture of West Bengal. The Arithmetic and Reasoning section tests the candidate's numerical ability and logical reasoning skills.

The total duration of the WBCS Preliminary Exam is two and a half hours, and the total marks for the exam are 200. Candidates who clear the Preliminary Exam are eligible to appear for the WBCS Main Exam, which is a written examination comprising six papers.

 WBCS Main Exam

The West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) Main Exam is the second stage of the WBCS exam, which is conducted after the Preliminary Exam. The Main Exam is a written examination that comprises six papers, and the syllabus for each paper varies depending on the post applied for.

The six papers of the WBCS Main Exam are:

Paper I - Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali (compulsory for all candidates)

Paper II - English (compulsory for all candidates)

Paper IV - General Studies-II (Science and Technology, Environment, and Current Affairs)
